Considerations When Choosing an Outdoor Deep Fryer
The type of fuel you’re comfortable using should be a top consideration. Propane gas and electric power are the two types of fryers on the market.
If you’re selecting a propane type of burner, you need to know how to handle and use it. Safety is key. Mishandling a propane tank can lead to a fire hazard.
If using an outdoor electric fryer, you need to think about where to plug it in. Due to this, the propane fryer is relatively more flexible as a power source. With propane, you can move the tank within a certain distance away from the fryer. With electric power, you need to look at the heat measurement known as British Thermal Units or “BTU.” An electric fryer whose burners have a BTU range of 30,000 to 60,000 should be good for a deep fryer. 1200 watts of power or more will preheat and recover oil fast.
How Much Food Will You Cook?
From seafood to poultry and more, you can cook many things in your deep fryer. If you’re planning to cook turkeys, you want something big. Some fryers aren’t appropriate in size for cooking turkeys but can cook everything else. So, check the capacity of the fryer and decide whether it will hold the amount of food you want to cook.
Keep in mind, the number of people you plan to serve as well. If it’s just you or you and your mate, obviously, you don’t need something large. There’s nothing wrong with being prepared for house guests or a camping trip with friends though!
Is it Easy to Clean?
We love to cook, but “somebody’s gotta clean.” Outdoor deep fryers are usually made of non-stick material, making the clean up easy. It should not be a problem unless you are one of those people who like to leave dirty cookware out too long. Don’t procrastinate. Clean after use.
A basket is a good accompaniment because it drains the oil from your food. We’d prefer to have it come packaged with our fryer than to have to get it separately. Some brands come with a frying pan and a basket for it.
You’ll also need:
- Heat resistant long thick gloves to protect your hands
- An injector to marinate food
- Thermometer for reading meat
- Insulated potholders
- A clock or timer
- Safety goggles to shield your eyes from oil splashing up
- A fire extinguisher
Selecting the Right Oil
All oils have a smoke point once it reaches a certain temperature. For deep frying, you need to use oils that have a high smoke point. Once the oil hits its respective smoke point, it will start breaking down. At this point, the smell and taste will be disgusting. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, canola, corn, grapeseed, vegetable, peanut, sunflower, and safflower oil have high smoke points and can be used for deep frying.
Some outdoor fryers come with their own set of safety features. A common one is an automatic shutoff. The unit will turn off once the oil overheats. Speaking of oil, the lid with a filter is an excellent feature too. This protects you from hot oil splattering out on you. For electric fryers, break-off cords help to make sure that the unit doesn’t fall over. This is a remedy for those who may trip over the power cord on accident. This break-off cord should do as the name implies and detach easily. Also, to prevent you from accidental burns, there are fryers with a cool-touch exterior.
More Safety Considerations
Deep frying oil is flammable and can get up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, so you need to be careful. If you have children, make sure they don’t go messing around the fryer outside.
As you will be dealing with oil at high temperatures, you should remember that oil and water don’t mix. At an instant when water touches it at these temps, it vaporizes, turning into super-hot steam. As it expands quickly, the oil can splatter on you, and if you’re not shielded with clothing or goggles, burn injuries can occur. Furthermore, never use water to put out a grease fire. Use a fire extinguisher.
Be mindful of the required cooking times for your food as well. Overcooking can potentially lead to fire danger. Don’t be so overconfident in your “culinary” skills that you think you’re too good to pay attention. If you can’t be present, then have someone else there, but never leave your deep fryer unattended.
Outdoor Deep Fryer Reviews
Enterprises Turkey Deep Fryer Oversized 44 Quart Stainless Steel Big Bird Kit by Bayou Classic for Big 25 lbs Huge Turkeys Complete KIT
This Enterprises Turkey deep fryer is built pretty solid. You should not have to worry about it breaking easily. It meets the expectations of being able to cook large turkeys. We have found that you are able to throw in a 23-pound turkey and it will come out delicious.
You’re going to be using a lot of oil for this pot. It can take about 6 or 7 gallons of it to cover a 23-pound turkey.
Despite this fryer being of top-shelf quality construction, it is not without a flaw. It does cook well, putting out 50,000 BTU’s of heat, but there are people that experience heating problems. The problem here seems to be in the design.
The bracket that holds the burner seems a little low. This puts more distance between the burner and the pot. Also. the pot does not sit on its stand well and looks like it can slip off of it. It’s metal sitting on metal. Once the oil gets hot enough, the pot may shake some which leave us a little cautious about it slipping.
- Quality construction
- Easy to clean
- Can cook a large turkey
- Includes heat resistant glove and a strainer basket
- Distance between burner and pot might be a little too far
- Pot does not sit securely on the stand
- No safety timer on the regulator
- No frying pan accessory
Putting out about 33,000 BTU of heat, we found this fryer able to cook food well. Its pot isn’t huge, but good at 29 quarts and is able to cook a 20-pound turkey. The frying pan with its basket comes with this King Kooker as well. It’s great to be able to use the pan for cooking smaller foods like fish and fries. That’s fish and chips for all our Aussies and Brits.
This King Kooker fryer is constructed of low-quality material. Instead of stainless steel, it’s more like aluminum. The product can be dented fairly easy and it may have some dents or bends during shipment. If you’re going for the lower end of the budget, frequent use can make durability questionable.
Some people complain about the safety regulator’s timer going off every 15 minutes. We consider this a pro because it’s a safety feature. You should never leave the fryer unattended. If you are trying to multitask preparing other food, you wll have a hard time doing that. Be prepared to stop your other task and turn the fryer back on every 15 minutes.
- Easy assembly
- Easy to clean
- Many cooking options due to frying pan accessory
- The frying pan has a heat resistant handle
- Has an auto timer for safety regulator
- Low-quality build
- Batteries are not included with the safety regulator (needs 2 AAA batteries)
Cooper & Co Backyard Pro Deluxe 30 qt Aluminum Turkey Fryer Steamer Kit | 55000 BTU Cast Iron Liquid Burner | for Barbecues Fair Clam Bake Pot Heavy Duty 20lbs Capacity | Ideal for Outdoor Propane Cooker
We did not find any problems with the burner not getting hot enough so you will be able to cook your food thoroughly. It comes with the strainer basket, turkey rack, hook, thermometer, and sauce syringe. The pot and lid are of low-quality build and can be dented easily.
Despite the construction, one great thing is that the base underneath the pot is of a sturdy build. It has a square shape and is big enough to allow a larger pot if you intend on purchasing bigger pots. You may be able to get, at least, a 50-quart pot. This product comes with a 30-quart pot.
- Easy to assemble
- Easy to clean
- Sturdy base, big enough for a larger pot
- Comes with a frying pan and basket
- The frying pan has heat resistant handle
- Low-quality material causing it to be susceptible to dents and damage
- Does not have an automatic shut-off timer safety regulator.
This outdoor fryer is not for turkey frying like the other fryers we’ve discussed. It is for frying smaller foods such as seafood, french fries, pieces of chicken, etcetera. The unit heats up well and fast with a 54,000 BTU burner. However, some people have problems controlling the heat with this fryer
Product construction is of lower quality. The pan is so thin that it can expand with the heat. Fryer baskets are thin as well. Although assembly is easy, the screws are quite small and could fall out. The stand is sturdy, but the legs are a little short and don’t come too far up from the ground.
Handles are heat resistant so you don’t have to worry about wearing a glove. Yet, it is good to wear one when cooking with fryers because you never know when grease pops on you.
- Easy assembly
- Heats up good
- Sturdy stand
- Thin material
- Heat may be too much for the pan which can lead to oil leakages.
- Does not have a cover
The stainless steel Bayou Classic fryer is good on heating up. Once the oil gets to the green area of the gauge, it holds its temperature very well. It has a temperature gauge on the front, but there is not a way to set it to your liking.
We found that this fryer can cook for at least 6 people or so and can hold about 4 gallons of oil. It doesn’t consume too much propane from the standard 20-pound tank. You should be able to cook about 80 or 85 pounds of fries and still have some propane left.
Product assembles easily, You should have it built up in about half an hour.
While the unit performs well, the welding is shoddy. Bad welding could potentially cause some oil leaks. In areas where there are no leaks, it’s still not good.
- Easy to clean
- Easy to assemble
- Heats well and holds its temperature
- Poor construction, specifically the welding
Our Pick For the Best Outdoor Deep Fryer
The King Kooker 1265BF3 Portable Propane Outdoor Deep Frying/Boiling Package with 2 Aluminum Pots is our winner. Frequent usage may compromise durability. Most people don’t deep fry outdoors every day, so it will serve you well for occasional usage. Unlike a few of the products mentioned earlier, this one has both a turkey pot and frying pan. While annoying to some, it includes a safety timer that goes off every 15 minutes or so, turning off the heat. This feature is great, just in case you leave the cooker unattended, which you shouldn’t.
