How to Choose The Best Small Gas Grill for You
Look at The Space You Have at Home
Since the size is the factor of your decision to buy a grill, one of the first things you want to look at is your space.
Where do you plan to put your small grill once you get it? You can eyeball it, but we recommend you actually measure the spot where you intend to put it. Use a tape measure. There are even space measuring apps you can download on your phone or tablet.
If you live in an apartment or condo that has a balcony, measure the balcony’s dimensions. Don’t rely on gauging it with your eyes. Online photos of the product can be misleading you to overestimate your space. Check the grill’s dimensions. For those that have large backyards, you might be able to get away with not measuring. Also, consider if you’d like to put your grill in a storage area when you’re not using it.
Check for Grill’s Available Cooking Space
Many people are single or if in relationships, have small families. Smaller gas grills are great for this amount of people and you are able to cook between 10 and 20 hamburgers at a time. You’ll save time as well as meat tends to heat up more when close to each other.
When making your selection, you want to look at the size of the cooking area. Check for the number of burners. A 2 burner gas grill might be enough to cook for yourself or a small number of people. If you plan to entertain a larger group of family and friends, consider getting a 3 burner.
Small grills weigh less and are easier to move around on casters (wheels) that you can lock if you choose to. Still, it is best to check the weight of the grill as a small grill can be anywhere between 50 and 100 pounds. Some are a little above 100 pounds. Some models have 2 casters and others have 4. You will have to tilt the 2 caster models to wheel them around.
Many of these grills have one or two shelves to help you do your food preparations. Consider how much cooking you like to do and if the shelf sizes match. Much of the time, these shelves can be easily folded down to help you conserve space as well.
Size of Propane Tank
Some people think switching from large to small grills requires a smaller tank. The standard 20-pound propane tank suits both. With some grills, you’ll find a cabinet for the tank. This is great if you plan to keep your grill outside.
What about Natural Gas?
With natural gas, you connect your home’s gas line to the grill. This is the second gas fuel method, other than using propane tanks.
There are a number of steps involved in setting up a natural gas line connection. Here is a YouTube video showing you how to do it. It includes the steps in the description area as well. We recommend you consult a professional if you decide to go the natural gas route to fuel your grill.
Precautions with Small Gas Grills
When turning on any gas grill, always keep the lid open to prevent gas from accumulating inside the chamber. Failure to do so can cause a fire or possible explosion.
If this is your first time dealing with one and you live in an apartment or condo, pay attention to this precaution. There will be other tenants in your building. Check with your landlord or state laws to see if there is a restriction against owning a grill.
You must operate your grill outside. When you’re not cooking, you can store your grill inside if you wish. However, you cannot store your propane tank indoors. It must be disconnected from the grill and stored outside in a well-ventilated place. You cannot store the tank in a place that exceeds a temperature of 120 degrees.
When not in use, make sure the tank is turned off by turning the valve in a clockwise direction. If there is any doubt about how to use your propane tank, consult the instruction manual that came with it.
Best Small Gas Grill Reviews
We’ve found this grill to be durable. You can cook on it a few times a week with no issues months down the line.
This grill lights up pretty fast. It heats the food evenly and has the cooking space to cook about 16 hamburgers at once. On the downside, you may experience inconsistent flames from the front to the rear. Don’t start cooking food first. After assembling it, heat the grill for about 10 to 15 minutes at high temperatures such as 500 degrees. This may allow the heat to burn the residue that’s on the metal.
The size of the grill makes for lower consumption of propane which leads to better savings for you. Also, the storage cabinet is big enough for the tank and you could fit some utensils in there with the tank.
The 4 rubber wheels make this product easy to move around for most people.
The product is easy to assemble. Many people are able to put it together within half an hour or so, by themselves. The elderly would have some difficulty. While some seniors found the assembly to be easy, others reported how challenging it was. They found it hard to handle the unit while it was in the box.

Assembly is rather easy. It should take between 45 minutes to 1 hour. All the tools and hardware are included.
The grill is easy to move as it has two wheels. Unfortunately, those wheels are plastic instead of the more durable rubber.
You can strap the grill on the back of a truck but there are no handles to carry it.
This product has a porcelain-coated cooking grate. This doesn’t give those char-grill marks like a cast iron cooking grate.

While it may take some 1 hour, most people can assemble this grill in 30 minutes.
The lid opens at an angle so you don’t reach over the fire.

Amongst the small grills, the Weber Spirit II E-210 is on the higher end of the budget. It’s a little on the heavy side at 103 pounds but shows good performance and longevity. Cooking grates are reversible with one side being thin and the other, thick. This is awesome for people who would like to cook something a little more delicate such as shrimp or fish. In that case, you’d use the thin side. So, even a vegetarian can enjoy themselves with this grill. The wider side of the grate makes a thick sear mark on your food, enhancing the flavor.
Another great thing is that the side tables have hooks that allow you to hang your grilling tools. Your seasonings and tools are within arm’s reach with these side tables. Everything is more organized this way.
One take back about the side tables is in using the left-hand side table. You have to use the tables as “handle hold” to wheel the grill around on its two wheels. There’s not an actual handle. The table may not hold well in place. When it doesn’t hold, the grill comes down to the ground when you’re moving it.
While you can assemble the grill by yourself, it’s much better to do it with 2 people. In this way, lining pieces and holes together is much easier. It can take about 2 hours to assemble with another person.
Dimensions (L, W, H): 48 x 26 x 57 inches
Weight: 103 lbs
Cooking surface: 360 sq. inches
- Easy to Clean
- Lights quickly
- Consistent heating
- Can serve 4 to 6 people
- Grease pan easy to change out
- Foldable side table saves some space
- One shelf folds down instead of both
- The grill cover only fits when the one side table is down
- Have to move the grill using the side table as a handle
- A lot of heat comes out of the back vent. It’s best to be careful what you have behind your grill because it can melt.
MASTER COOK 3 Burner BBQ Propane Gas Grill, Stainless Steel 30,000 BTU Patio Garden Barbecue Grill with Two Foldable Shelves
Here we have a 3 burner grill at a pretty affordable price. It heats up fast, moves on two wheels, and has two foldable tables. The two wheels are large which makes lugging it around easy enough.
There doesn’t seem to be many issues with flare-ups with this grill, unlike some other grills. Having 3 burners is a nice convenience too. It still isn’t enough burners for a large gathering, but it will serve a small one quite well.
This grill is not without some construction issues. There is no handle to use when moving it. The product does not feel durable and the grill cover is made of very thin steel. Its hood lacks the strength to withstand heat as it will bubble and melt.
When cleaning, the burnt food can fall through to the ground of your patio deck as there is no tray underneath it. I recommend putting some aluminum foil down underneath to prevent that from happening.
Dimensions (L, W, H): 46.46 x 20.87 x 41.14 inches
Brand: Master Cook
Weight: 45.8 lbs
Cooking surface: 339 sq. inches
- Lights and heats quickly
- Foldable tables make for easy storage
- The design allows for carrying all necessary items and tools before cooking
- Low-quality construction
- Hood cannot withstand high temperatures long without melting.
- No tray underneath to catch food debris and oil drippings.
In the end, our preference is towards the Weber Spirit II E-210. It’s on the higher end of the budget and has the 3rd largest cooking space, but you are likely to get fewer issues. Besides having shelves with hooks, a big plus is the reversible cooking grates. This gives you some creative cooking freedom. You can use the thin side for delicate foods like fish. Its size is just right for a small patio or a balcony without compromising performance and quality. The Weber Spirit E-210 has two big wheels for transporting unlike a few grills here with small wheels.
